focus on the concert poster 2015

The TWO asked Romain Barbot for the graphic design of the concert poster at the Saint-Pierre des Cuisines auditorium on October 21, 2015 in Toulouse. Real graphic artist Toulouse, you can find all of his work on his site: : I am sailor. Since this collaboration, many Toulouse artists have chosen to trust him (The headbangers, Initiative H, Sugamama, Parachute Music, The Roach, etc.).

Here is a small explanation of the visual of the poster to better understand his choices …

The buildings are all borrowed from photos taken by Roman from New York. One can recognize the Empire State Building. All the stylistically styled architecture is an allusion to the concert’s main piece, Johan De Meij’s Symphony No. 2 « The Big Apple », which, as the name suggests, is an ode to the city of New York, the symmetry of its streets, its massive architecture.

The colors evoke George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. Blue, for the famous « blue note ». As for the orange, it recalls the color of the old serigraphs of jazz albums of the 50s.

The constellation, which is above all an element of decoration, can be a symbol of the orchestra itself since there is here the notion of réuinion. Gather points, just like the TWO which brings together its Toulouse musicians today exerting their talent all over the world (some come from New York, Geneva, Basel, and all of France). We also find small elements reminiscent of the orchestra or more generally the music, like the small « score bubble » on the top left or the « wavelets » symbolizing the wind, the breath, just under the T and the R of « orchestra « .

It was a desire of the TWO to create a poster that goes beyond the usual codes of classical music in order to propose, not a pretty and effective poster, but rather a work in its own right, inviting reflection and stimulating the imagination, so to stir the curiosity of the public.

Romain Barbot also made the artwork of the cd Blue Apple and the T-shirt.
